All you need to know about Fon Spots

Fon Spots are a key element of Fon because:

  • Fon routers and Foneras broadcast Fon Spots.
  • Fon members share their broadband with other Fon members through Fon Spots.
  • Fon members use Fon Spots to connect when they are out and about.

Where do Fon Spots come from?

Fon Spots are created in two ways: Foneras and Fon enabled routers.

  • Foneras: When you add the Fonera to your existing network by plugging it into your ISP's modem and making sure it's connected to the Internet it will start broadcasting the "FON_FREE_INTERNET" signal that creates the Fon Spot.
  • Fon enabled routers: If your ISP is a Fon partner, your current modem might already be broadcasting (or can potentially broadcast) a signal which contains the word "Fon". For example: "FON_ZON_FREE_INTERNET", "Fon_Belgacom", etc. which creates a Fon Spot.

How can I identify Fon Spots?

Fon Spots always contain the word "Fon" in the name of the public signal, for example: Fon_WiFi. Depending on where in the world you would like to connect you may find Fon Spots created in conjunction with our partners, but these are also identified by the word "Fon".  For example: "Fon_MTC", "Fon_Belgacom", etc.

If you are using the Fon App, this will automatically identify and connect to Fon Spots.

How can I locate Fon Spots?

Fon Spots worldwide can be located in advance using our Map tool. The Fon App (available for the most popular smartphones) features an embedded version of our Maps enabling you to find Fon Spots on the go.
